Growing up as a Southern California teenager in the
1960s, Wagner had decided to focus on a radio career by the age of 13,
about the time his voice was changing. He claims he hadn't even noticed
the difference until several adults had made a comment that his voice
sounded more like a man's than that of a 13 year old boy. They said,
"You should be on the radio with a voice like that."
Seeing this as a calling, Gary began his affair with the world of
broadcasting. He kicked it off by listening to the radio incessantly
for two years. He listened mostly to L.A. rock stations like KFWB and
KHJ as well as his hometown Ontario's local station, KASK. Late at
night he secretly listened to the "forbidden" broadcasts of Wolfman
Jack, using a small transistor radio he had hidden under his pillow.
Although the formats and personalities he was listening to on-the-air
were entertaining and educational, still he yearned to "get behind the
wheel."
